What makes Co poisoning and extremely dangerous is its insidious onset. It affects mental ability, rendering a person incapacitated without them knowing anything is wrong. Any sudden exertion by the affected person may cause collapse, preventing escape from the contaminated location. The result is often fatal.

% Volume of Carbon Monoxide(Co) in the air Symptoms

0.01% tightness across the forehead with prolonged exposure
0.03% flushed skin, headache, breathlessness, and palpitations on exertion within 4-5hours
0.05% severe headache, nauses, weakness of knees, increased respiration and pluse, collapse on exertion

Combustion Standards

Because of C0 and lack of Gas appliance servicing, there is a Minimum standards of combustion have been laid by the British standard inststitution.
All ‘approved’ Gas appliances must conform to this specifications: BS5258. standards in Britain are based on the ratio of the amount of carbon monoxide produced to the amount of carbon dioxide produced. The ratio C0: C02 must not exceed 0.02 under laid down conditions. For installed gas appliances operating at the maximum setting the ratio should not exceed 0.004. under standard conditions the C0:C02 ratio must not exceed 0.02:1
